Traveling Dubai & Abu Dhabi

Dubai is all is is hyped up to be! It has glamour, over the top and the best of everything!

Dubai really has so much to offer. There is glamour, shopping, great experiences and a lot of friendly smiles.

Arriving during July for our 10 day trip, it was not only one of the hottest months of the year but we landed smack in the middle of Ramadan.

{Tip: Be sure to check your travel dates as being in Dubai during Ramadan will limit your excursions, nightlife and overall experience}

In Dubai they are quite relaxed at some hotels and International attractions, however you really could only eat and drink behind closed doors and not in public whatsoever. Which kind of presented a challenge since it is super hot and you are super busy and active during the day.

That said…we had a lot of fun “fasting” like the locals and enjoying Iftar at 7:15 in the evenings. Food NEVER tasted that good!

We really tried to experience everything that Dubai and Abu Dhabi  had on offer and I am happy to share the outings, the events and my thoughts about everything.

In Dubai we stayed at the Four Points by Sheraton in the Sheik Zayed Road. What an awesome hotel, friendly staff and great breakfast.  There is a lovely Italian Restaurant inside the hotel as well as an amazing view on the roof by the pool.

High Tea at the Burj Al Arab

Going for High Tea at one of the most exclusive/expensive hotels in the world, comes at a price and most definitely will be an experience. The actual treats being served is very nice however I have tasted better selections at local hotels. The experience will however be something you will remember for a lifetime. The views are exquisite and you get treated like royalty. – You have to book in advance for the high tea, and will only be allowed in side the hotel grounds with a reservation. The cost for the High Tea at the Burj Al Arab is around R1600 per person.

 Dinner Cruise

We went on a dinner cruise, (these trips can be booked via the hotel) – there is brochures everywhere so you can really just call them the day before or the morning of and book your trip.

The dinner cruise was a nice thing to do at night, but the food was not all that great. I will do this one for the experience but not expect too much. I am sure there is a few others that offer more expensive options so make sure you pick the one you want. However…that said…it was fun to go on the river for a 2 hour round trip and see Dubai from another perspective.

Desert Safari

This was such a fun experience. The desert safari is a 4×4 trip into the desert, where you will be dropped off at a large tent area, where you will be able to ride 4 wheelers as well as camels. This is also where I first saw a desert eagle and had my first official Iftar with the locals.

Burj Khalifa – Tallest building in the world

What an amazing view you get from the top!! You really can see everything in Dubai…well it certainly feels like it. Going up in the Burj Khalifa is accessible via the Dubai Mall. If you want to do this, make sure you book in advance since there is limited places and spots for each session.

The Dubai Mall & Aquarium

I LOVE the Dubai Mall. You are surrounded by the best in Fashion, Glamour and smack in the middle of all this Fashion and Beauty overload you get the Dubai Aquarium.

Walking through the tunnel, seeing the sharks, stingray’s and other animals it really was a high point and a MUST SEE.

Rainforest Cafe

Close to the Dubai Aquarium there is a restaurant called The Rainforest Cafe. This was the highlight of our dining experiences for me. The whole restaurant had decor to make you feel like you are having dinner in the jungle. The animal’s come to live, the noises and movements acts amazing effect to the whole experience and the food really is lovely! Definitely worth a dinner reservation!

Dubai Fountains

I loved this!  At the back of the Dubai Mall there is the Dubai Fountains.Every night there is a lovely show every 30mins. Make sure to reserve a spot at one of the restaurants overlooking the fountains so you can experience first hand the amazing show.

Atlantis Waterpark & Dolphin Experience

This has to be the highlight of the trip. To be able to swim and interact with dolphins really is such a experience and one I will remember for a lifetime. We bought the Dolphin Experience package which gave us free entry to the waterpark afterwards. This was such a fun day and the waterpark really is a lot of fun!! One day will be more than enough time spend and you will then be able to ride every ride at least twice. This experience was one of the most expensive things we experienced on the trip (About R3000) but it was totally worth it!

Getting around in Dubai

Taxi’s really are the norm in Dubai but they can be quite costly. A very effective, cheap and great way to travel in Dubai is via the Metro. It is not at all difficult to navigate your way around and you can travel one whole day all round Dubai for 16 DHS.

Abu Dhabi

After Dubai we went to Abu Dhabi and spend 2 days there. While we were there we visited the Grand Mosque and the Yas Waterworld and Ferrari World. This was so much fun!

The Grand Mosque

The Gand Mosque is free of entrance fee and there is guided tours which is very informative, so make sure to take part in one. You do have to adhere to a strict dress code (respectable clothing) and they do have Abaya’s you can wear while you are on the property which you return after you are done. The Grand Mosque has a capacity to handle 40 000 people at once for prayers.

The Chandeliers (It hosts the biggest Chandelier in the world) in the mosque as well as all the finishes is amazing.

Ferrari World

Ferrari World hosts the world’s fastest Rollar Coaster. This ride is really INSANE and we went on it twice. (Try to sit in front, best feeling ever)

We bought a combination ticket which gave you entrance to the Ferrari World as well as the Yas Waterworld across the road. Its cheaper that way. Dont spend too much time at the Ferrari World, since you would want to spend more than enough time at the water park!

Yas Waterworld

I really LOVED every moment in this park. The rides really are amazing, and there is something for everyone. You can spend a whole day here and still feel like you need to stay longer. We had so much fun, and i will DEFINITELY recommend either a day trip to this waterpark even if you have to drive from Dubai (which is about 90min’s drive) for the day.
