Dressing For Your Shape

Dressing your body is probably the biggest challenge women face daily. You page through the latest fashion magazines and spot a beautiful Maxi dress draped with chiffon and floral prints.  “Gosh this looks so beautiful” you ponder.. “I wonder if it will look so beautiful on me too?

Well ladies, we are here to help and give you some tips and teach you tricks on how to create the perfect balance.

This is the dilemma most of us female human species struggle with.. what to wear for my body type.. so here is a breakdown of four main (fruit – who chose this)? categories you will likely fall into.. if not, feel free to add another fruit/vegetable name you feel you relate too..  I am a banana – tall straight and slightly curved due to wearing my back pack on one shoulder my entire school career.. 

Anyways moving on from the banana shape.. Herewith the four main categories which you will likely fall into.

The hourglass shape:


If you have a small waist with curves you are an hourglass.. well hello Beyonce and Sofia Vergara. The mistake women make is to try and hide their curves.. the secret – emphasize them baby! This is your best feature! Your body will love pencil skirts, crop tops, high waisted pants, skinny jeans and wrap dresses as well as clothes that accentuates your waist.  More Hourglass celebs include Salma Hayek, Scarlett Johansson and Halle Berry. you need to focus on waist hugging garments. A-line cut or wrap dresses are a perfect match for the hourglass-shaped body. Whatever you do, do not hide your body with bulky clothing! Opt for figure hugging, fitted garments and a good bra to show off your puppies!

Apple Shape:


You are considered a beautiful Granny Smith Apple if you are slimmer at the bottom and carry more weight at the top. So most of your weight is above your hips, which is narrower than your shoulders and your back which is broader.  Apple celebrities include, Drew Barrymore, Queen Latifah, Eva Longoria, Jennifer Hudson. So what is your secret tip? Elongate your torso and show off your legs honey! You need to select garments that will elongate your body. Choose V-neck, A-line or empire tops and dresses . Invest in structured jackets which can create a curve in your chest and hips. Boot cut or flared pants will probably look better on your figure creating a more proportioned look from your shoulders down.

Your goal is to minimise your midsection by highlighting your shoulders and legs. Trousers that sit low on the hips will help avoid any stomach bulges. This is normally the best feature of apple ladies. Your goal would be to soften your upper body while Accentuate your lower body.

Pear Shape:


To all our ladies opposite to an apple, you are a beautiful pear meaning your lower body is wider then your upper body and your hips, significantly larger than your bust and wider than your shoulders. One lady comes to mind when I wrote this – Kim Kardashian. You are lucky to fall in the Kardashian group.   More pear-shaped celebrities include Eva Mendes, Jennifer Love-Hewitt and Katherine Heigl.

With this body shape you want to achieve balance therefore you need to emphasize your waist and arms as well as your upper body and shoulders. Wear dresses that slim your hips and thighs. Wear interesting necklines, drawing attention to your neck and shoulders.

Banana Shape:

Last but not least we have the banana body type. These women’s waist is about the same as their hips and bust. Your silhouette isn’t as curvy as the pear or apple bodies. Our banana ladies include Natalie Portman, Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Hilary Swank. Their waist hip and shoulder widths are similar.  Your tip here is to create curves. Think pencil skirts, waist belts, tops with ruffles, collars and detail, layer to add dimension.

Women dress to look skinnier. The secret is the moment you dress for your body type and get the balance right, that is when you will automatically look in proportion  which will make you feel your best in your outfits.  This is fashion, pairing that perfect garment with your body type to create balance.  Also, shape-wear is a must regardless of your size. It smooths you out and gives you a great silhouette.  The trick would be to identify your best asset and work it girl.  If you have great shoulders and arms then wear a strapless  top with a statement necklace. Or perhaps you have a tiny waist, rock a fabulous  belt to really show it off.

Remember to select high quality fabrics that hugs you in all the right places creating a streamlined silhouette.
