Be Sun Smart and Practise Safe Tanning

We all know the saying “Fake it till you make it” but how relevant is “Faking it” when it comes to alternative ways of getting a pre-summer glow?

With your skin being the bodies’ largest organ it should be taken care of, but naturally some women don’t want to walk around looking like blinding luminescent beings. We understand completely; fellow sun-soakers might think you’re from a distant, sunless planet (but let’s not over exaggerate). The reality though, is that a lot of people are using tanning methods that might be harmful to their skin, so the question is: “Is there a better alternative out there to a natural, summer glow?”

Sunbed and Tan Can – why is it a “No!”

In a desperate attempt to get a quick tan before stepping out, women rush of to the tanning salons to get their tan-can and sunbed time in, but women of all shapes, sizes and ages should think twice! According to, one tanning session can already boost the potential of a women developing melanoma by 20 percent.

Perry Robins, MD and President of The Skin Cancer Foundation says that despite what tanning salons say all tanning methods involving some sort of UV and radiation exposure have certain consequences to them “The cumulative damage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation can lead to skin cancer, as well as wrinkles, brown spots, and other signs of premature skin aging.” UV lights actually cause a fair amount of damage to the DNA in your skin cells!

Sun – All day every day.

When we were younger our mothers would plaster sunscreen all over bodies, make us wear hats and play under an umbrella between 12 and 2 in the afternoon. Back then, we did not know what the lady was going on about but looking back, mom knew a little thing or two.

The fact is, our bodies need that extra bit of vitamin D produced by sunlight but people have a tendency to soak up as much of so called good thing as they can and we are all familiar with the line “Too much of a good thing…”

Sunburn is the farthest thing from tanning! The big scientific name is “Erythema” and occurs when too much energy is absorbed by your skin actually causing the tiny blood vessels in your skin to burst from excessive exposure. Sunburn is an injury to your skin and not a method for faster tanning, sunburn actually slows down your tanning rate after a while.

Getting an extra boost of color on the beach is not something one should be doing carelessly “A tan, whether you get it on the beach or in a tanning bed, damages your skin,” says Dr Robins.

After this little warning shock all you ladies can breathe a little easier because for every issue we as woman face – we come up with a better and healthier solution.

Bronzers and sunless tanners; why are they better?

With safer and faster results bronzers and self-tanning lotions are just as beautiful and effective as a natural tan. “It’s certainly much better than going out or going to tanning salons and getting exposed to UV light” says dermatologist Robin Ashinoff, MD, of Hackensack University Medical Centre in New Jersey. Sunless UV-free tanners are usually categorised as Bronzers and Sunless tanners or Self-tanning lotions.

Cosmetic bronzers wash out like regular cosmetics and come in several different forms like gels, powders, sprays and sticks (like deodorant sticks)

Sunless tanners (self-tanning lotion) only stain the skin, which means you’re not actually hurting or harming your skin so to speak – leaving you without the damage like that of other artificial methods.

We don’t have to sacrifice our health to achieve the bronze look but some women have complained that self-tanners and bronzers create uneven streaks and orange skin. Today there are some top quality products on the market with top quality results. Prepping your skin and following the instructions accordingly should give you the results you want. Remember to be patient and not to overdo it, if you are still hesitant rather ask a professional for some advice.
